Some dreams stay with us for years, waiting for the perfect moment to become reality. For me, one of those dreams was visiting the Arctic Circle and witnessing the magical beauty of the Northern Lights.
Growing up as a Melanesian girl from the warm tropical islands of Papua New Guinea, the idea of travelling to one of the coldest places in the world felt like such an adventure. But I have always been someone who loves exploring, experiencing new cultures, and pushing myself beyond my comfort zone so I was ready for the challenge.
My Norwegian adventure began in Spain, where I travelled to Oslo before continuing my journey north to Tromsø, the gateway to the Arctic.
Arriving in Tromsø at midnight was an experience I will never forget. From the moment I stepped outside, I felt the intensity of the freezing winter air, something completely different from the tropical climate I was used to. My friend Liyang and I needed to find a taxi to take us to Sommarøy Resort, which was about two hours away from the airport.
But at midnight, every taxi driver we approached refused to make the long journey.
Just when we started wondering how we would get there, a warm and friendly driver appeared and offered to take us. It honestly felt like a little miracle. I truly believe an angel was sent to help us that night because everything aligned perfectly when we needed it most.
After arriving safely, I thanked our amazing driver and quickly made my way into our warm and cosy room. Looking out the window at the breathtaking Norwegian mountains covered in ice was a moment I will always treasure. It felt peaceful, magical, and completely unreal.
For the next two days, my friend and I patiently waited for the Aurora Borealis to appear. We stayed up, watched the skies, and hoped that nature would put on its famous show.
Then, on the third night, she finally arrived.
The Northern Lights danced across the sky.
Seeing the Aurora Borealis with my own eyes was an emotional experience that is difficult to put into words. Standing there beneath the Arctic sky, watching the lights move and glow above me, I felt something inside me shift. It was a moment of peace, gratitude, and healing that I will carry with me forever.
Of course, no Arctic adventure would be complete without doing something completely crazy! So my friend and I decided to take the ultimate challenge: dipping into the Arctic Ocean and running straight into the sauna afterwards!
We did it three times!
I have to admit, my feet were so frozen afterwards that I could barely feel them but the warmth of the sauna brought us back to life almost immediately. It was an unforgettable experience, not only for the adventure but also because of the health benefits and the feeling of accomplishment afterwards.
After our Arctic experience, we enjoyed a beautiful bus ride back to Tromsø before flying to Oslo, Norway’s stunning capital city. We spent time exploring the city, experiencing the culture, and of course trying the local cuisine.
One of my favourite memories from Oslo was tasting a reindeer burger. It was surprisingly delicious and reminded me a lot of beef, definitely something I never imagined I would try!
Throughout my time in Norway, I found the people to be incredibly kind, helpful, and welcoming to visitors. Their warmth made the experience even more special.
Norway was everything I dreamed it would be and more. From the frozen landscapes and magical Northern Lights to the unforgettable adventures and moments of reflection, this journey reminded me that life is meant to be experienced.
I would absolutely love to return one day — perhaps when the weather is a little warmer next time!
Until then, thank you Norway, for giving me memories that will last a lifetime. ❄️✨
