In 2016, after years of building Estars Cosmetics and providing outcall makeup services, I started to see an opportunity to create a space where people could come together to experience beauty, transformation, and confidence. I knew it was time to open my own beauty studio.
That dream became Bilas Studio.
The name “Bilas” comes from Tok Pisin and means to dress up. I wanted the studio to represent exactly that — a place where people could come to prepare for special moments, feel confident, express themselves, and experience the joy of being transformed.
On May 16th, 2019, Bilas Studio officially opened its doors. We started with just two chairs and one barber, but we had a big vision and a lot of determination.
From those humble beginnings, Bilas Studio has grown into what it is today — a team of 20 talented staff members offering a full range of beauty services, including spa treatments, barber services, braiding, and chemical services.
Looking back, I am incredibly proud of how far we have come. What started as a small studio has grown into a place where talented individuals can build their careers, develop their skills, and serve our amazing customers.
One of the biggest reasons I wanted to start Bilas Studio was because I wanted to give back to my country, Papua New Guinea. I often asked myself:
“How can I use my skills, my talents, and my connections to create opportunities for others?”
For me, this was the answer.
Building a business is not only about creating something for yourself; it is also about creating something that can positively impact others. Providing employment opportunities and helping my people grow has always been one of the most meaningful parts of this journey.
Like any business, we have faced challenges along the way. My dream has always been to expand Bilas Studio across Papua New Guinea, but the current economic climate has made that journey more challenging. Rising costs, including rent, salaries, and the pressures of operating in an increasingly competitive and saturated beauty industry in Port Moresby, have tested us in ways we never expected.
There are moments when I look back and remember when the market was stronger and opportunities felt easier, but I remain hopeful that one day our economy will recover, businesses will thrive again, and we will continue growing towards the vision we have always had.
Through every challenge, one thing remains constant — my gratitude.
I am deeply thankful for every loyal customer who continues to walk through our doors, support our team, and choose Bilas Studio. Your support has allowed us to continue our journey, provide employment, and keep creating a space where people can feel beautiful and confident.
Bilas Studio is more than just a beauty business. It represents a dream, a purpose, and a commitment to creating opportunities for others.
This journey has taught me that success is not only measured by how much you build, but also by how many people you can bring along with you.
And this is only the beginning...
